WHAT IS HAZELNUT

Hazelnut is a type of shelled nut that belongs to the birch family. Hazelnut seeds grow inside cup-like green leaves; When it matures, it has a round and hard shell. Hazelnuts, which need a humid climate to grow, have a very wide production area, especially in our country.

WHERE DO HAZELNUT GROW

Today, hazelnuts are grown mostly in Turkey, but also in countries such as Italy, Azerbaijan, Iran, America, Chile and Georgia. Hazelnut loves humid regions with abundant rainfall, and its growing areas in our country are mostly in the Eastern Black Sea Region. Hazelnut cultivation can be done in Eastern Black Sea cities such as Rize, Ordu, Trabzon and Artvin, as well as in Central Black Sea cities such as Bolu, Samsun, Sinop and Tokat.

In Turkey, hazelnuts grow in almost the entire Black Sea region, especially Ordu, Trabzon, Sakarya, Zonguldak and Giresun.

It is simple, round, the edges of its leaves are double-toothed, and the tip is pointed. The flowers bloom in spring just before the leaves. He is a domesticated person. Male flowers are catkin-shaped, 5–12 cm long and yellow. Female flowers are very small, hidden in the buds throughout the winter, 1 – 3 mm long, red in colour. The nux fruit is 1-2-3 cm long and 1–2 cm in diameter. It has a goblet that completely or partially surrounds the shell. The shape and structure of the cup is important in identifying hazelnut species.

It is a tree with a maximum height of 5 meters and an average height of 3 meters. It has leaves in summer and is deciduous in winter. It has simple leaves and leaf edges are double-toothed.

Shoots: While the previous year's shoots are brown, new shoots have a color between yellow and gray.
